Old Fashioned Nutmeg Cake
Ingredients
1/4 C. butter or margarine
1/4 C. shortening
1-1/2 C. sugar
3 eggs, beaten
2 C. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. nutmeg
1 C. buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Frosting:
6 Tbsp. melted butter
2/3 C. packed brown sugar
1/4 C. cream or canned milk
Dash of salt
1 C. shredded coconut
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Cooking Instructions
Cream sugar, butter, and shortening. Add eggs; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients. Add to shortening mixture alternately with buttermilk or sour milk. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees. Bake 2 (9 inch) layers for 25 minutes. Bake 1 (13×9 inch) pan for 30-40 minutes. Frosting: Mix all ingredients. Spread on hot cake and put under broiler for a few minutes until golden color. Watch carefully.
