Dutch Apples And Ham
Ingredients
3 pound. smoked ham (8 ounce. slices)
4 C. dried apples
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
2 C. flour
1/3 C. milk
4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 egg, well beaten
3 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 tsp. salt
Cooking Instructions
Cover dried apples with water and soak overnight. In the morning, cover ham with cold water and boil for 3 hours. Add the apples and water in which they have been soaked and boil for another hour. Add brown sugar. Make dumplings by sifting dry ingredients together 3 times. Stir in beaten egg, milk and shortening. Drop the batter by spoonfuls into the hot liquid with ham and apples. Cover kettle tightly and cook dumplings 15 minutes.
