Applesauce Cake With White Butter Frosting
Ingredients
2 3/4 C. sifted cake flour
2 C. sugar
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 C. soft shortening
1/2 C. water
1/2 C. walnuts; chopped
1 1/2 C. applesauce
1 very large egg
White butter frosting:
3 C. confectioners sugar; sifted
1/3 C. shortening
About 3 tsp. milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Cooking Instructions
Grease and flour 13 x 9 inch pan. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. Add shortening, water, and nuts. Beat 2 minutes, and add applesauce and egg. Beat 2 more minutes. Pour into prepared pan. Bake in 350 oven for 45 to 50 minutes. Frost with White Butter Frosting when cool. Frosting: Mix all ingredients together until smooth. minutes. Pour over hot cake and let stand 1 hour before removing from pan. Gently run knife down each curve of the sides and center tube to get topping to seep down.
