{"id":2076,"date":"2026-02-15T18:41:44","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T18:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/recipe4thecook.com\/\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T18:41:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T18:41:44","slug":"halloween-layer-cake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/recipes4thecook.com\/cake\/blog\/2026\/02\/15\/halloween-layer-cake\/","title":{"rendered":"Halloween Layer Cake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><b><font face=\"comic sans ms\" size=\"5\">Ingredients<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p>1 3\/4 C. cake flour<br \/>\n1 tsp. baking soda<br \/>\n1 tsp. salt<br \/>\n1 1\/2 C. white sugar<br \/>\n1\/3 C. shortening<br \/>\n1 C. buttermilk or sour milk<br \/>\n3 egg whites<br \/>\n4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted<br \/>\n1 tsp. butter or margarine<br \/>\n1\/3 C. butter or margarine, softened<br \/>\n1 1\/2 Tbsp. grated orange rind<br \/>\n1 tsp. grated lemon rind<br \/>\n1\/4 tsp. salt<br \/>\n1 egg yolk, unbeaten<br \/>\n4 C. sifted confectioners sugar<br \/>\n1 Tbsp. orange juice<br \/>\n2 tsp. lemon juice<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b><font face=\"comic sans ms\" size=\"5\">Cooking Instructions<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 350. Line bottoms of two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.  Sift flour, baking soda, salt, white sugar together. Stir shortening just to soften. Sift in dry  the ingredients Add 3\/4 C. milk; mix until all flour is dampened. Beat with electric  mixer. Add egg whites, melted chocolate, remaining milk, beat well and pour batter into  2 round 8-inch layer pan. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. When cool frost between layer and  over top and sides with Golden Orange Frosting. Mark outlines of Halloween cats plus  bats by lightly pressing paper cut-outs into frosting, then removing paper. Melt 1 square  unsweetened chocolate with 1 tsp. butter. Using a brush, fill in outlines with  chocolate mixture.  Golden Orange Frosting &#8211; Cream together butter, orange rind, lemon rind, salt. Add  yolk and mix well. Add the confectioners sugar, alternately with orange juice and lemon  juice, beating well after each addition.
